James Blunt’s supremacy on the U.K. charts continued yesterday (July 31), as the Atlantic-signed singer/songwriter’s “You’re Beautiful” single started a third week at No. 1 and “Back To Bedlam” began a fourth week atop the album survey.
Blunt’s closest challenger on the singles list was another singer/writer, Canadian-born Daniel Powter, whose “Bad Day” (Warner Bros.) debuted at No. 2. The track is now also climbing the Australian top 10 after scoring a top 5 peak in France in April.
Eminem’s “A** Like That” (Interscope) was a new entry at No. 4 on the British chart, while long-standing U.K. female pop act Bananarama, which now features two of the group’s original three members, returned at No. 14 with “Move in My Direction” (A&G Productions). It’s Bananarama’s 16th British top 20 single, a run that began in 1982.
There was a No. 15 start for “You and Me” by Uniting Nations, the duo of Paul Keenan and Daz Sampson whose last single, “Out of Touch,” spent 13 weeks in the U.K. top 20. They’re joined on the follow-up by a new frontman, 20-year-old Craig Powell.
Behind Blunt on the album chart, Coldplay’s “X&Y” (Parlophone) climbed back 3-2, Faithless’ “Forever Faithless” (Cheeky/Sony BMG) rose 4-3 and Kaiser Chiefs’ “Employment” (B Inique/Polydor) rebounded 5-4 as “The Essential Michael Jackson” (Epic), last week’s highest new entry at No. 2, fell to No. 6. The novelty act Crazy Frog, which recently topped the British singles chart for four weeks with “Axel F,” arrived at No. 5 with the album “Crazy Hits” (Gusto).
Gorillaz’ “Demon Days” (Parlophone) returned to the top 10 with a 15-8 jump in its 10th chart week, while Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill — Acoustic” (Maverick) opened at No. 12 despite some savage U.K. press reviews. “The Back Room” (Kitchenware) by Birmingham rock act the Editors was new at No. 13.
The Coldplay album is No. 1 for a seventh straight week on the European Top 100 Albums chart, and the Crazy Frog single tops the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally for a sixth week.
