Clinch, the film’s executive producer and co-director, will do a one-hour live-tweet starting at 7 p.m. through the @ShannonHoonFilm account. Questions should be tweeted using the hashtag #hoondoc. Never-before-seen footage, interviews and photos will be released throughout the campaign, which ends May 5.
For the film — which has been in the works for more than five years — Clinch and co-director Colleen Hennessy are using more than 200 hours of personal video that Hoon shot during the band’s rise in the early ’90s. Hoon died in 1995 from an accidental overdose.
Hoon took a handheld camcorder with him everywhere after moving to Los Angeles and forming Blind Melon, best known for their 1993 hit “No Rain” and accompanying video featuring a dancing bee girl. The footage, shot during the heyday of MTV, captures the band’s journey from anonymity to stardom.
“Shannon’s commitment to documenting his life resulted in an impressive body of work that rivals his output as a musician,” writes Clinch, who is giving Hoon a co-director credit on the film. “He wanted people to know him, hear his music, and understand the times in which it was being made. He wanted it to be made into a film when the band got famous and ‘all of their memories were burned out.’”
A photographer, Clinch has received Grammy nominations for directing videos for Bruce Springsteen’s “Devils and Dust,” John Mayer’s “Where the Light Is” and Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite’s “Get Up.”
