Scottish singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini’s sophomore album “Sunny Side Up” (Atlantic/Warner Music) debuted at No. 1 on the new U.K. chart yesterday as Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” (Interscope/Universal) moved back 2-1 for a second stint atop the singles survey.

Nutini’s first album, “These Streets,” debuted and peaked at No. 3 in the U.K. in late July 2006, spending a total of 15 non-consecutive weeks in the top ten over the following 14 months. It’s now certified triple platinum for 900,000 shipments. The follow-up sold nearly 63,000 units last week, outdoing its nearest rival, Australian vocalist Daniel Merriweather’s “Love & War” (J/Sony Music Entertainment), by 50%, according to the Official Charts Co. Nutini has a busy summer of festival dates and a North American tour ahead of a U.K. itinerary from Sept. 27, for which tickets will go on sale Friday (12).
Merriweather’s debut set includes his current hit single “Red,” which started a third week at No. 5 yesterday. The new titles nudged
Eminem’s “Relapse” album (Interscope/Universal) down to No. 3 after two weeks at the top. Syco Music/Sony Music Entertainment’s Escala fell 2-4 with their self-titled set, but the same label’s classical crossover vocalist Paul Potts debuted at No. 5 with his second album “Passione.”
Also new in the top 20 of the album chart were Diana Krall’s “Quiet Nights” (Verve/Universal), at No. 11, and eels’ “Hombre Loco” (Polydor/Universal) at No. 18. Eels’ last studio album, “Blinking Lights and Other Revelations,” reached No. 16 in the U.K. in 2005.
“Boom Boom Pow” entered the U.K. singles chart at No. 1 three weeks ago before spending two weeks at No. 2. It’s the first single to
regain its crown here since “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean in 2006. “Bonkers” (Dirtee Stank) by Dizzee Rascal featuring Armand Van Helden thus fell to No. 2 after two weeks at the summit as Kasabian’s “Fire” (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment), the first single from the midlands rock band’s third album “West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum” (out today), arrived at No. 3.
Other notable climbers on the new singles chart included “Knock You Down” (Polydor/Universal) by Keri Hilson featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo, up 12-6, and Empire Of The Sun’s “We Are The People” (Virgin/EMI), 26-14.
Green Day’s “21st Century Breakdown” (Reprise/Warner Music) is in a second week atop Billboard’s European Top 100 Albums, while Lady GaGa spends a 15th straight week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles with “Poker Face” (Interscope/Universal).
