The Grammy-nominated wordsmith reworked the lyrics of Dylan’s 1964 classic “The Times They Are a Changin’” with messages of caution about the new president.
The outspoken singer slung his acoustic guitar and captured a performance of his new anti-Trump piece from a hotel bedroom. “I wrote these lyrics within half an hour of seeing Donald Trump’s inaugural speech last Friday evening and played it in Salisbury that night. With apologies to Bob Dylan,” writes Bragg in a message accompanying the clip.
When Bragg has a beef he typically leaves nothing tucked away. He once addressed the British parliament wearing a Clash t-shirt and in 1985 helped establish Red Wedge, the loose umbrella organization which brought together like-minded artists to campaign for the election of a Labour government. His updated “The Times They Are A-Changing Back” is vintage Bragg.
“Come Mexicans, Muslims, LGBT and Jews, keep your eyes wide for what’s on the news/ For president Trump is expressing his views/And I fear the mob that he’s inciting, will soon break your windows, burn down your schools/For the times they are a changing back,” he sings.
And in a later verse, “In the land of the free and the home of the brave/Martin Luther King is spinning in his grave to see a bigoted bully taking the stage/And he calls upon us to be faithful to the ideas he died for in another age/For the times they are a changing back.”
