Upon first listen to Billie Eilish’s latest album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, it’s clear the songs go deeper than the surface. Pairing the intricate lyrics and melodies with the equally creative music videos has had fans wondering, “How does she come up with this?”
For YouTube Music’s latest “Artist Spotlight Stories,” Eilish opened the door to her a mind by explaining the creative process behind her biggest hits. “Anytime I’m creating anything, I’m thinking about the video, about the artwork and about the colors. The way its gonna feel and the way its gonna look. How people are going to perceive it, I guess,” she explained, nothing that she has synesthesia, a phenomenon in which one sense is simultaneously perceived by another. In Billie’s case, seeing and hearing go hand-in-hand.
“When I have a crazy dream or if I just have a thought in the middle of the night, I’ll sit up, whether the light is on or whether the light is off, I’ll sit up and i’ll just write whatever I’m thinking or whatever I just dreamt about,” she continued of her creative process, showing the hallway she drew, which ended up being in the “bury a friend” video.
“I just need people to know how important this s— is to me,” she concluded. “Everything goes together.”
