Musicians are collectively taking action against climate change today (Sept. 20), as global strikes, inspired by teen activist Greta Thunberg, are taking place in multiple major cities.
Social media posts from young artists such as Billie Eilish and Maggie Rogers have made waves of support reach a greater level. Eilish wiggled around in an alarming new outfit with the words “TICK TOCK” stacked on top of each other. “Our time is running out. The climate crisis is very real,” the “Bad Guy” singer noted in the caption. “We need to speak up and demand that our leaders take action.”
Those who marched today even transformed today’s hottest lyrics into their rallying cries. “I just took a DNA test turns out I’m 100% freaking terrified for our future,” one sign read, which “Truth Hurts” artist Lizzo posted on her own Instagram.
Whoopi Goldberg used her voice to recognize the young activists stepping out for climate action as cunning leaders and new or soon-to-be voters in this country. “To all the young people marching around the world demanding action on climate change you can no longer be discounted because of your age & makes you a force to be reckoned with & 1 day YOU will be asked to vote,” she wrote on Twitter. “Prepare them for your opinion so they are not shocked by your vote.”
John Legend echoed her sentiments about the new wave of budding global influencers and how they “are challenging us to confront the realities of the climate crisis,” he tweeted.
