The Billboard Latin Music Award winner who saw the biggest bump in real album sales after the telecast wasn’t a performer or a presenter.
Shakira’s English-language “She Wolf” sold 3500 copies, a 71% sales gain, the week ending May 2‹perhaps on the strength of “Gitana,” which is No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin pop airplay charts. Shakira, who has been speaking out against Arizona’s immigration enforcement bill, performed the song in English on the “Ellen” show April 28.
Shakira won Billboard Latin Awards April 29 for Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year, Female and Tropical Airplay Artist of the Year, Female, but didn’t perform or present on the Telemundo telecast.
The Billboard Latin Music Awards, presented by State Farm, aired live from Puerto Rico’s Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot on the Telemundo network. The night’s big winner with nine awards, Aventura, saw a 12% gain for its album “The Last,” which was already the top-selling Latin album of 2009 and to date in 2010.
Mexican pop trio Camila, which wasn’t a Billboard Latin Awards finalist this year, sold 3,300 copies of its latest Sony release “Dejarte de Amar,” after its well-received performance on the show – a 191% sales gain.
Winners who may have benefited from the show included Luis Enrique, whose “Ciclos” sold 1,000 copies (a 104% gain) the week the Nicaraguan salsa star showed up to take home trophies for Tropical Albums Artist of the Year, Solo and Tropical Airplay Song of the Year for hit single “Yo No Se Manana.”
Local favorite Tito “El Bambino,” who performed and won seven awards, saw sales gains of 22% and 33% for the original and deluxe editions, respectively, of his album “El Patron.”
The digital songs picture is slightly different, with Shakira’s “Gypsy”
gaining 313% in sales with 30,000 downloads. Far behind were the awards performers. Among those who gained significantly were Juan Luis Guerra, who performed his new single, “Bachata en Fukuoka,” and gained 69% in sales, with 1,100 downloads.
The No. 1 debut this week of Daddy Yankee’s “Mundial” on the Top Latin Albums chart may have been helped by the reggaeton star’s appearance on the show.
