Joan Sebastian will receive the Billboard Hall of Fame award for his career achievements and Shakira will be bestowed with the Spirit of Hope award at the 2006 Billboard Latin Music Awards, to be held April 27 at Seminole Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Fla. Shakira is also confirmed to perform at the event, which will be broadcast live by Telemundo.
Sebastian is being recognized for a career that has spawned 32 albums in a wide array of styles. His latest release, “Inventario,” is a finalist for regional Mexican album of the year/male solo artist.
Shakira is being saluted for her work with her Fundacion Pies Descalzos, which aims to improve living conditions in her native Colombia, specifically in the area of Barranquillia, where she was raised. Shakira is a finalist in eight categories this year, including Hot Latin Songs artist of the year and Top Latin Albums artist of the year.
Previous recipients of the Billboard Hall of Fame Award include Marco Antonio Solís, Armando Manzanero, Los Lobos, Mongo Santamaría and Banda El Recodo. The Spirit of Hope Award has previously been awarded to Juan Luis Guerra, Mana, Ricky Martin, Olga Tanón, El General and Soraya.
