The Strokes shot a video last night in Brooklyn, N.Y., for “12:51,” the first single from their sophomore album, “Room on Fire,” due Oct. 21 from RCA. As with videos for prior tracks such as “Last Nite,” “Someday” and “Hard To Explain,” the new clip was directed by Roman Coppola. “12:51” will be delivered Sept. 9 to U.S. radio outlets for airplay consideration and released commercially Oct. 6 in the U.K.
Like its predecessor, 2001’s “Is This It,” the new album contains 11 songs but at just over 32 minutes in length, is about three-and-a-half minutes shorter than the debut. A number of songs underwent last-minute renaming, with “Raga” changing to “Automatic Stop,” “Supernova” morphing into “12:51” and “Never Needed Anybody” being altered to “Between Love and Hate.”

A day after taking over as owner of the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators, Eugene Melnyk is giving fans a free concert with the Eagles Oct. 8 at Ottawa’s Corel Centre, one night prior to the start of the NHL regular season. According to ESPN, the concert is expected to cost Melnyk $2 million. “They’re my wife [Laura]’s favorite band,” Melnyk said.As previously reported, Warner Strategic Marketing will on Oct. 21 release the two-disc retrospective, “Eagles — The Very Best Of,” featuring a newly recorded single, “Hole in the World.”

Tracks from Michelle Branch, Blur and Aimee Mann are among those on “Radio Sunnydale: Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Music From the Television Series” soundtrack, due Sept. 30 via Virgin. It will be the second such set of previously released songs associated with the campy WB cult hit starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. The first, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer – The Album” (TVT Soundtrax) bowed at No. 51 on The Billboard 200 in 1999 and has sold 212,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Last year another “Buffy” album, subtitled “Once More With Feeling,” bowed at No. 49. The Mutant Enemy/Twentieth Century Fox /Rounder title was the soundtrack to a musical episode of the show.
The CBS soundtrack to the 1992 movie that spawned the series featured cuts by Matthew Sweet, Ozzy Osbourne and the Cult, among others.
