Eighteen of Mariah Carey’s best-known ballads have been compiled for an album appropriately titled “The Ballads.” Due Jan. 20 via Columbia/Legacy, the project features such hits as “Hero,” “One Sweet Day,” “Vision of Love,” “Always Be My Baby” and “Dreamlover.”

Also included are Carey duets with Luther Vandross (“Endless Love”) and Whitney Houston (“When You Believe”). Carey is expected to play an intimate show during street week, with details to be announced, and will likely be the subject of a radio special to coincide with Valentine’s Day.
Meanwhile, plans are afoot for Carey to play select shows in Los Angeles and New York next May.

Collective Soul has joined Sammy Hagar on the newly launched Roadrunner imprint Loud & Proud Records. The group’s next album is expected in summer 2009.
Collective Soul had previously recorded for its own El Music Group label after leaving Atlantic earlier in the decade. Its last studio album was 2007’s “Afterwords,” which has sold 81,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The Keith Jarrett Trio’s next album, “Yesterdays,” will be drawn from an April 30, 2001, concert at Tokyo’s Metropolitan Festival Hall. Due Jan. 27 from ECM, the project features renditions of Charlie Parker’s “Scrapple From the Apple,” Horace Silver’s “Strollin'” and standards such as “Shaw’nuff” and the title cut.
The last song is a cover of Victor Young and Ned Washington’s “Stella by Starlight,” recorded during soundcheck before an April 21, 2001, show at Tokyo’s Orchard Hall.
Jarrett will play a solo concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall on Jan. 29.
