Phil Anselmo made his first public appearance since the on-stage murder of his former Pantera bandmate “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott last night (Aug. 15), playing rhythm guitar for New Orleans sludge-metal merchants Eyehategod at CBGB in New York.
Before launching into their set, the band shared a joint onstage and Anselmo took the microphone, dedicating the performance to “his brother, Dimebag Darrell.”
However, the artist, who also fronts Superjoint Ritual and has played with EHG guitarist Jimmy Bower in the band Down, did not sing. After Abbott’s death in December, Anselmo said in a statement, “this is the last you’ll be seeing of me for a long time.”
As for the frequently on hiatus Eyehategod, the group’s one-hour set favored songs from its 1993 sophomore album, “Take As Needed for Pain.”
