Big K.R.I.T. has teamed up with producer 9th Wonder for their new collaboration “Reign On,” premiering exclusively on The Juice.
Presented by Crown Royal, the track touts a plucking bass sample culled from The O’Jays’ “For the Love of Money,” topped with thwacking drums and a tinny horn melody. The Meridian, Miss. native, who first worked with 9th on a cut included on Rapsody’s 2011 street album “Thank H.E.R. Now,” drops feel-good rhymes on the song, rapping, “Push it to the limit with my family friends / We ball ‘til we fall then we do it again.”
In a behind-the-scenes video filmed in a recording studio, the pair explains that “Reign On” is dedicated to basketball veteran Dr. J and embraces positivity. “It’s a very inspirational song, but it’s upbeat,” says 9th. “It’s not preachy. It’s basically just a key-to-success kind of song.”
K.R.I.T. adds, “It’s definitely got a groove to it as far as just 9th said, upbeat and kind of party. But at the same time, I’m still trying to drop jewels here and there about being successful and being about your family and kind of striving forward through things that may try to tear you down.”
The Def Jam rapper, who is prepping the release of his new mixtape “K.R.I.T. (King Remembered In Time),” released his major label debut “Live From the Underground” in June 2012. The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with 41,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
9th Wonder last dropped his instrumental mixtape “Tutankhamen” in 2012, joined forces with rapper Murs for “The Final Adventure,” which hit retail in November.
