There was once a time when big room feels were everything dance fans craved, but since 2013, the dance floor has moved on to machine gun trap and future bass wonk. Five years is a long time, though, and as those newer genres lose luster and degrade into faded tropes, the world once more yearns for the explosive feeling of main stage electricity at its finest.
No other group did the monster build and drop of progressive house on steroids like iconic threesome Swedish House Mafia. The world won’t soon forget when Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello took the Ultra stage to close out Miami’s 20th anniversary event. You’ve watched the set, you’ve read up on SHM by the numbers, but your body needs more ballsy groove. In that case, may we suggest these 10 break-neck, feel-good remixes from some of the biggest names in dance who all have been touched by the genius that is SHM doing the most.
Swedish House Mafia – “One (Your Name)” (Garmiana Remix)
“One (Your Name)” is hands down (or up, however you feel in the moment) one of the coolest house melodies ever written. It’s so simple and dark and groovy. It demands that you grab someone sexy and dance. The Garmiana remix somehow amplifies the energy into an even more primal experience. The new drop is such a jungle banger. This song sounds like red and green lasers piercing the blackness of a club at 3 a.m. We’re completely addicted to this feeling, and you should be too.
Swedish House Mafia – “Leave The World Behind” (JayKode X Lookas Remix)
“Leave the World” behind is one of SHM’s most progressive tunes. Released early in the trio’s career, it harkens back to classic house styles with a soulful vocal and cascading noise. This remix from JayKode and Lookas brings the 2010 vibe up to 2017 speed with a dark, brash synth hook that pulsates in your face like a million flashing lights. It’s a heat-seeking missile of dance floor wildness, so go crazy to it.
Swedish House Mafia – “Don’t You Worry Child” (Tom Staar & Kryder Remix)
The original “Don’t You Worry Child” is quite beautiful and bombastic. Maybe it needs to be more progressive with a bigger thump and a broader build. Maybe it needs more anxious excitement, so when you hit the top of your wave, you explode into a million tears of joy. If you feel such a desire, Tom Staar and Kryder’s remix of “Don’t You Worry Child” is the only thing that’ll scratch the itch. Just be ready for it.
Swedish House Mafia – “Save the World” (Zedd Remix)
Zedd is king of pop-house maximalism, and his official remix of SHM classic “Save the World” is a perfect pairing. He takes his time with a starry-eyed build that crashes down into grimy electro sludge with delicious late-aught grit. It’s classic Zedd bossiness, before he was putting Maren Morris on tracks or even king of “Clarity.” Turn up the love and the edge with this one.
Swedish House Mafia – “One” (Congorock Remix)
Seriously, you can’t get enough “One” in your life, especially when Congorock brings a remix with delightful desert haze. It’s much in the style of his famous “Babylon” bass beater. You’ve most likely jammed to this remix on the dance floor at some point or another. Watch out, night crawlers. A sidewinder this way sneaks, and it’s a snaking rhythm that’ll keep you sweating all night long.
Swedish House Mafia – “Save the World” (Alesso Remix)
Alesso is a giant in the big room world, but he takes a really cool twist on his remix of “Save the World.” This isn’t your average shimmering explosion. He gives it hefty electro bite before bringing in the familiar melodic pre-chorus. By the time the hook falls on your outstretched hands, you’ll be ready to play Atlas for hours on end.
Swedish House Mafia – “Don’t You Worry Child” (Emdi & Coorby Remix)
Want to stretch the magic of “Don’t You Worry Child”? Emdi and Coorby slow the tempo so that hopeful feeling never runs dry. The pair also beefs the percussion with a loud kick and some hearty head-nod attitude. This is a feet-stomper you can hear from the bleachers. It’s a Trap Nation release, so you already know.
Swedish House Mafia vs. Knife Party – “Antidote” (Tommy Trash Remix)
There’s no cure for Swedish House Mafia addiction. All you can do is take this mother higher on a nasty electro remix from Tommy Trash. The Knife Party collaboration is a fan favorite on its own, but this spicy rendition will make you scream into the wild night. These synths are untamed animalistic energy. Once you’ve heard this roar, there’s no turning back.
Swedish House Mafia – “Save the World” (Knife Party Remix)
As well as working alongside SHM on “Antidote,” Knife Party gave “Save the World” a cool remix of surprising proportions. Knife Party are known for bringing the monster bass, but this remix lures you in with pretty melodies before slapping you in the face with absolute electro weirdness. It’s not your usual jam, so handle with care.
Swedish House Mafia – One (Netsky Remix)
Yo, “One” might be the best Swedish House Mafia song in the trio’s catalog, so how about we give it “One” more remix? This time we’re jacking the tempo and going full drum’n’bass with Netsky. It’s the most hype remix on our list, and maybe the most fun. If you want to peak with the big dogs, this is your chance.
