Berklee will host a Women’s Empower Symposium at the music college’s campus in Valencia, Spain on March 27. The event, spearheaded by a group of Master’s students at the school, is designed to present female industry role models to young women starting their careers in an industry dominated by men on the executive level.
Leila Cobo, the Executive Director of Latin Content for Billboard, and Billboard Barcelona correspondent Judy Cantor-Navas will be among the featured speakers at the symposium. Beyonce publicist Yvette Noel-Schure, producer and Universal imprint Meccalani head Angie Martinez, film composer Jeanine Cowen, Mexico’s Victoria Records studio owner Victoria Morales-Kühne, Buenos Aires promoter and manager Allie Silver, ARK publicity founder Christine Kryzanowski, and artist, composer and producer Patrice Rushen are also among the independent achievers who will lead workshops and participate in panels at the day-long conference. Swedish artistic director Alf Oloffson, the only man on the bill, will share his perspective on issues concerning women in music.
“Today’s entertainment industry is led by a collection of powerhouse leaders [but] the women in these leadership roles aren’t acknowledged as they should be,” states Michelle Golden, President of the Berklee Women’s Empower Symposium and student at the school’s Global Entertainment and Music Business graduate program. “As the next generation of female entrepreneurs, we thought it was necessary to take the discussion on the subject of diversity — and gender — one step further in the hope of recreating the narrative through these portraits of success.”
The program includes panels on “Recreating the Narrative” for women in the music industry, “Taking on the Latin Market” and the future of music,” as well as workshops in film composing, setting up a studio and music journalism and programming.
The Berklee campus event is open to a limited number of non-students, with tickets available at Eventbrite.
“Diversity is frequently described as the main ingredient of creativity,” says Emilien Moyon, Director of Berklee Valencia’s Global Entertainment and Music Business Master’s program. “And diversity – whether international, cultural, social or gender-driven – is inherent to the Berklee philosophy. As such, we are proud to be presenting this symposium, not least because it is an initiative led by our students and future female leaders of the music industry.”
