Festival season is in full summer swing, and the heat rains down from these decks “Like Fire.” If you were at Ben Nicky’s set at Tomorrowland, you likely heard his latest head beater, a collaboration with Australian outfit Mash’d N Kutcher. It’s a sweltering, face-crunching sing-along, featuring vocals from Luciana over a beat Nicky calls “a fusion of vocal trance, hard trance and psy trance.”
“I really enjoyed crossing some boundaries with this one,” the producer adds, but his part of the song came in the later stages. Mash’d N Kutcher tells Billboard Dance that “Like Fire” started more than a year ago during a writing session with Luciana in Los Angeles.
“Day one was a journey through many ideas, but in a feeling many writer/producers will relate to, we hit a wall and left empty-handed,” the duo says in a joint statement. “Thankfully, thoughts sparked overnight, and on day two the vocal was born — [the] inspiration being the struggle for love and power between the queen of the jungle and her king.”
The instrumental started with “half-time, festival trap vibes,” and when Mash’d N Kutcher returned to Australia, the pair started experimenting with sounds, turning the tune into a rave-ready four-on-the-floor beat. The duo sent the demo to Nicky, who added the final spice, and the rest is history.
“Like Fire” is a thwomping, hardstyle banger ready to kick your teeth in. It’s out everywhere Thursday on Kayzo’s label Welcome Records, but you can get the full sneak preview a day early, exclusively on Billboard Dance.
