It might have taken 20 years, but Dirty Heads have finally found their true voice. The Huntington Beach, California alternative rock has matured with age, reaching a type of musical renaissance with their self-titled new album, out July 15.
Lead track “That’s All I Need” is a hooky, feel-good affair which plants one foot into the mainstream, and the other in retro-world.
The Dirty Heads, ‘Home | Phantoms of Summer: The Acoustic Sessions’: Exclusive Album Premiere
“It’s just got that throwback kinda ’90s hip-hop vibe with a little bit of southern California,” says frontman Jared Watson in a new making-of video, which Billboard exclusively premieres below.
The band teamed up with Justin Gray (Mariah Carey, Joss Stone) to produce the track “because we knew that he understood the Dirty Heads vibe,” Watson tells Billboard. “This is the song that we wanted to write so if you’ve never heard the Dirty Heads before you would instantly get a feeling for where we came from and what we’re about. This is our summer time anthem.”
Dirty Heads follows the band’s most successful album release to date, 2014’s Sound of Change, which opened at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Albums Chart and reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200.
