Lorin Ashton, a.k.a. Bassnectar, had stiff competition via Black Sabbath and the Black Keys when he closed out Perry’s stage of the first day of Lollapalooza 2012, but the EDM beat slinger had no trouble drawing fans to the dance stage. His barrage of beats drew the massive, crowd-surfing audience to the brink of musical insanity — a sight the California producer has been looking forward to seeing for some time.
“I’d say this is one of the pinnacles of the summer for me,” said Ashton of his Lolla set when he joined Billboard’s Jonathan Brooks on our backstage “love couch.” “I’ve been waiting for this for about a year. I’m always excited to play, but this feels like Christmas eve to me.”
With his kinetic shows and recent album “Vava Voom” blowing up the scene, Bassnectar has been one of the most in-demand EDM artists for the past few years, but the demands of constant producing and performing suit Ashton just fine. “I think if I had more than a week off, I’d go insane,” he says.
“As grueling as life is, I am constantly blown away by how lucky I am. It’s like living a dream right now.”
