MADRID (The Hollywood Reporter) — The City of Barcelona said Oct. 19 it will be the first in Spain to fine people who purchase pirated DVDs and CDs, if new legislation passes later this year.
The new ordinance, which would carry a penalty of up to €500 ($600), targets “uncivic” behavior by penalizing the customers of pirated material and prostitution, vandals and “aggressive begging.”
In addition to the readily available pirated DVDs and CDs on the streets of Spain, many sellers carry backpacks full of merchandise, offering them to customers in restaurants, cafes and bars. The legislation is expected to pass later this year and is the first of its kind in Spain.
