Seattle indie-pop stalwarts Barcelona are planning to kick off 2014 with a multi-part bang, as the trio will self-release three EPs, collectively titled “The Melodrama,” within the first three months of the year. The first edition, “Love Me,” is due out on Jan. 21, 2014, and fans can dig into its sparkling opening track, “Background,” exclusively on Billboard.com:
Best known for their 2009 Universal/Motown album “Absolutes,” Barcelona is now free from a record deal and continuing to tinker with the sound they began harvesting in 2005. “Background” kicks off the “Love Me” EP with an impressively grandiose chorus that frontman Brian Fennell says would have been unimaginable in earlier iterations of the group.
“‘Background’ actually started out as a completely different song — at first, it sounded more like ‘Take My Breath Away’ than an ‘upbeat, jealous but Im’a be alright club jam,'” says Fennell. “If you would have asked young Barcelona years ago if a song like ‘Background’ would be in its future, we would have laughed, flipped our flat-ironed emo swoop out of the way and gone back to trying to squeeze into our H&M pants. Don’t get me wrong, I am very proud of where we’ve come from, but our hope is that people have as much fun enjoying the new sound on these EPs as we had creating them.”
Following the January release of the five-song “Love Me” EP, Barcelona will issue four more tracks as “Love You” in February 18, and then four more as “Know Love” on March 18. Each EP from “The Melodrama” will be released digitally, with limited editions available on vinyl, and a spring 2014 tour will be announced soon.
