The British Academy of Composers & Songwriters, the independent trade association for U.K. music creators, has launched a label, Academy Recordings Limited, and forged an exclusive worldwide deal with the Orchard which sees the digital music firm provide marketing and distribution.
The artist-driven, digital-only label, announced today during Midem in Cannes, will carry recordings from the Academy’s 2,000 strong membership, including works from Robin Gibb, Chrissie Hynde, David Arnold and Peter Gabriel, who tonight will be feted with the prestigious MIDEM’s “Personality of the Year” accolade at a function in Cannes.
“Academy Recordings represents a new way for our members to get their music to the public in the 21st Century,” comments David Ferguson, board member and Academy chairman. “This is a very exciting first step which we believe will strongly benefit the U.K. Music Writing Community.”
Academy Recordings’ debut release will feature a multi-genre combination of newly-recorded tracks and previously-unreleased archive recordings. A release
date has yet to be announced.
