A boat owned by Nick Carter — a member of the Backstreet Boys who recently launched a solo recording career — easily won the Super Vee class yesterday (Nov. 20) during the first of two races that comprise Florida’s Key West Offshore World Championship. The second and final heats, for more than 80 entries in the American Power Boat Association-sanctioned event, are set for Saturday and Sunday.
Nick Carter Racing, piloted by Key West racers Lee Murray and Steve Oropeza, averaged 90.57 mph around the 68.25-mile course through Key West Harbor and surrounding waters off the lower Florida Keys. Carter, watching from the shore, was so excited with the win, he jumped into the water.
“Sure I jumped in,” Carter said. “We won the national championship this year and we’ll win Saturday to clinch the Worlds.” John Tomlinson of North Miami and Hugh Fuller of Clearwater drove Drambuie On Ice to victory in the 13-boat Super Cat class. The Drambuie team is a favorite to win a second consecutive world title.
Earlier this month Carter released the Jive solo album “Now or Never,” which debuted at No. 17 on The Billboard 200. Last month, lead single “Help Me” peaked at No. 36 on Billboard’s Top 40 Mainstream airplay chart. He has a slate of tour dates set up in support of the album, kicking off Dec. 1 in Trenton, N.J.
