The field of best new artist nominees at the Latin Grammy Awards has traditionally shown great geographic diversity. This year is no exception, with artists hailing from throughout the Latin world. Here are the nominees listed by the country where their careers began.
Argentina/Peru
Miami-based Periko & Jessi Leon — he’s from Peru, she grew up in Argentina and the United States — are getting attention for their debut, Fuerza Mayor, produced by Andres Castro. Daniela Spalla, from Argentina, worked with producer of the year nominee Rafa Arcaute on her catchy “Ahora Vienen por Nosotros.”
Colombia
Miranda, who performs with pop and blues influences, was the winner of the first edition of TV talent show La Voz Colombia. Juan Pablo Vega plays alt-pop that boasts big arrangements and commercial flair. He’s signed to a label set up by producer Julio Reyes Copello, who has worked with Marc Anthony, among others.
Mexico
Singer-songwriter Caloncho displays Mexican folk influences in the easygoing acoustic pop-rock of his independently released debut EP, Fruta.
Spain
A finalist on an American Idol-like TV show in Spain, singer-songwriter Pablo Lopez went gold (20,000 units sold) in his homeland with his romantic pop album Once Historias y un Piano.
Venezuela
Although Aneeka hails from Venezuela, she’s gaining traction in Mexico with her debut album, Ni Antes Ni Despues. Jazz vocalist-trumpeter Linda Briceno performs sophisticated fare and has collaborated with the likes of Arturo Sandoval. Julio Cesar is an established hit songwriter and his Todo Empieza Sonanado release has been nominated for best contemporary tropical album. Mariana Vega‘s distinctive voice is showcased in the romantic alt-pop of her first single, “Mi Burbuja” (“My Bubble”).
