Early arrivals into Austin for the 10th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival found plenty to do Thursday night, beginning with a kick-off mini-throwdown at the home of Charles Attal, partner in ACL Fest producer C3 Presents. C3 partners Charlie Walker and Charlie Jones were at the hang, as were agents, managers, and other music biz types. Later, Coldplay preceded Friday night’s show for the ACL thousands with a killer performance in front of a much smaller crowd at a taping for the ACL festival’s namesake, the long running Austin City Limits television show at the program’s new studio adjacent to the W Hotel. The performance, set to air New Year’s Eve, had a bit of a bizarro world feel to it as the fans counted down to “midnight” and Coldplay singer Chris Martin offered his best post-Christmas wishes while temperatures outside still hovered near the 90s.
Elsewhere in Austin, a sold-out Emo’s played host to J Roddy Wilson, Futurebirds and C3 management client Delta Spirit, while a short distance away Pretty Lights mesmerized a packed house at Austin Music Hall. All of these acts are booked at the ACL Fest, which begins today at Austin’s Zilker Park with a Day One lineup that includes Kanye West, Nas & Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Bright Eyes, Ray LaMontagne, Santigold, Big Boi, Foster The People, Mavis Staples, North Mississippi Allstars, Secret Sisters, Reptar and many others, including headliners Coldplay.
