Perennial road-dogs the Avett Brothers have been keeping fans happy with numerious legs of U.S. tours following the release of their major label debut, “I and Love and You,” which debuted at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 back in Sept. 2009. But Avett devotees now have a new song to sink their teeth into: “The Once and Future Carpenter.” The brothers and co. recently revealed the cello-heavy, midtempo track on their episode of CMT’s “Unplugged,” a performance you can watch below.

“If I live the life I’m given, I won’t be scared to die,” Scott Avett sings on “The Once and Future Carpenter,” which starts similarly to the Avetts’ “Murder in the City” and swells beautifully.
The North Carolina folk band continues to work on its eleventh studio release, which finds its members collaborating with producer Rick Rubin once more. As Rubin so eloquently phrased it in an interview with Billboard.com last month, “It’s so beautiful, just the honesty that they deliver. You feel what good people they are.”
Back in February, Scott Avett spoke with Billboard about the album’s initial record sessions. “We’ve learned a lot,” he said, “and we’ve got many more tools than we did when we made records in the past. We have more confidence on more instruments. We have more confidence in our singing. And we’re more open; if I’m singing a part and I feel like my brother [Seth] could sing it better… well, two, three, four years ago I would have said, ‘I wrote these lyrics. They’re coming from me. I’m gonna push and do it.’ Now I’m pulling back and saying, ‘Let him do it.'”
