After buzzing Los Angeles for the past few years, Autolux is getting a chance to spread its hypnotic, noisy sound to mainstream fans as the opener on the high-profile Nine Inch Nails/Queens Of The Stone Age fall tour.
“We started hearing that before Nine Inch Nails’ shows, they were playing our music,” Autolux guitarist Greg Edwards tells Billboard.com. “There were one or two interviews with Trent Reznor where he talked about us and then soon after that, someone contacted us about the tour. That’s what’s really nice about it — it came from him. I think he had two or three bands he wanted to open the tour and we were one of them.”
The band has been touring non-stop this year in support of its 2004 DMZ/Columbia debut, “Future Perfect,” including opening gigs for the Secret Machines and the Raveonettes. And while critics have described the group’s music as “effects-heavy” and in the vein of My Bloody Valentine or Sonic Youth, Edwards insists, “I don’t feel like we really have that many effects going on.
“So the fact that that’s what people’s perception is, I actually like that,” he continues, “because that means there is something going on that’s creating this illusion.”
Although one new track, “Reappearing,” has already become the traditional Autolux set closer, Edwards is conflicted about the group’s next project.
“I’m sort of hoping that at the end of this year that we’ll be done but then again, it all depends on what happens,” Edwards says. “If the record starts taking off more, then there is more pressure to tour. If that happens, wonderful, but if not, wonderful also because that means some time in the next three or four months we’ll get to start working on the next record.”
