Australia’s Triple J network has a new music director.
The state-funded station’s longtime music director Richard Kingsmill rises to group music director while Nick Findlay slots into the role he vacates.
Findlay, who recently served as assistant music director, now takes on more direct responsibility for the broadcaster’s day-to-day programming in what is considered to be among the most powerful gigs in Australian music.
Findlay is the natural successor to “The King”. The right-hand- man to the music director for the past decade, Findlay got a taste for the job when he filled in while Kingsmill was on sabbatical in 2012.
Meanwhile, Kingsmill continues to lead and co-ordinate the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s team of music directors, which includes Double J‘s Dorothy “Dot“ Markek, Triple J Unearthed’s Dave Ruby Howe, ABC Local Radio’s Jacinta Parsons and now Findlay,
The dual promotions are “recognition of the way the teams have been working for the past two-three years, since the introduction of Double J and the added responsibility of the team to program music for ABC Local Radio,” Chris Scaddan, ABC Head of Music, told The Industry Observer, which first reported the news.
“Richard’s experience and expertise stretches across a broader remit,” Sydney-based Scaddan continues, “with Nick taking on more direct responsibility for triple j’s day to day programming.”
Triple J has the enviable reputation as Australia’s key music discovery platform. And for many indie and alternative-leaning artists here and abroad, it’s the launch-pad into the Aussie market.
Three years ago this month, the ABC pressed the button on its Double J branded station, which targets listeners who graduate from the 18-24 year old audience that is Triple J’s core demographic. Triple J also runs the Hottest 100 listener poll, an Australia Day tradition which recently set a new record with 2,255,110 votes cast, up 7% from the previous year.
