A majority of Australians have voted in favor of same-sex marriage, officials announced on Tuesday (Nov. 14).
More than 12 million Australians answered a national survey, with 61.6 percent voting yes and 38.4 percent voting no.
“They voted ‘yes’ for fairness, they voted ‘yes’ for commitment, they voted ‘yes’ for love,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said. “And now it is up to us here in the Parliament of Australia to get on with it.” He hopes to legalize same-sex marriage this year, before Christmas.
#MarriageEquality trended on Twitter as the news was revealed, and many stars tweeted in celebration.
“Yes!!!!! Congrats Australia! Every step taken is one closer to World Peace! Love love love you!” Miley Cyrus tweeted.
“It’s a g’day. Way to go Australia. #MarriageEquality,” Ellen DeGeneres said.
“Today is a great day for human rights. #Australia says YES to marriage equality. BRAVO! This makes me so happy,” Ricky Martin wrote.
