As bright and peppy as ever, Astro is back with “Baby.”
Their first song since February’s “Again,” “Baby” was released Monday and is an 8-bit popfest to herald in the summer. The lead single from their fifth EP, Dream, Pt. 01, the song’s energetic melody is incredibly bouncy, providing an upbeat, synth-driven venue for the the six men to sing and rap over. Paired with a colorful music video, “Baby” is breezy pop goodness.
Overflowing with colors and cute moments, Astro’s latest music video is the epitome of bubblegum pop. Distinguishing each of the members by pairing them with a color of the rainbow and a series of personality traits (“Red” is for energy, passion and warm love; “orange” is cheerful and jolly, etc.), the video has the septet switching off between sleek choreography and trying to win over their “Baby” in a variety of ways.
Dream, Pt. 01 is Astro’s first EP to diverge from a seasonally themed concept — previous albums were named Spring Up, Summer Vibes, Autumn Story and Winter Dream — but all eight electropop songs still feel very summery, reflective of the overall cheerful feeling that Astro has exhibited since their debut in 2016. Though many K-pop male acts nowadays veer away from cutesy in favor of more masculine, rebellious imagery, the cheery atmosphere that they exhibit with each new single suits Astro very well.
One of K-pop’s rising acts to watch, the group has seen three albums place on the World Albums chart and last year’s “Breathless” peaked at No. 21 on the World Digital Songs chart. They performed at last year’s KCON LA within half a year of their first album’s release, hyping up the crowd with their bubbly set. Only time will tell if Astro’s feel-good vibe will be their key to a successful career in the cutthroat K-pop industry.
