Tim Fagan hardly expected to get a call from John Mayer on his cell phone last week but, then again, who does?
The 26-year-old Los Angeles-based songwriter/musician was selected as the winner of Mayer’s Esquire magazine songwriting contest, taking lyrics the artist published in his monthly column and arranging them to his own melody. Last week, Fagan answered a phone call from whom he presumed to be a telemarketer and, instead, heard Mayer’s voice on the other end singing his song, “Deeper.”
“We got a chance to talk for five minutes. He was very complimentary of what I’d done and I’m talking to his management now, setting up the publishing for the song,” Fagan tells Billboard.com.
“But I think he totally gets my situation, he was in the same situation only a few years ago,” the Hawaiian native adds. “He could tell that I was serious about making a real career for myself and has extended a huge favor to me.”
In addition to co-writing credits on the song, Fagan won a John Mayer Signature Fender Stratocaster guitar for the effort.
Fagan’s version of “Deeper” is available on his John Mayer Trio, featuring drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino. The group’s inaugural effort, “Try! The John Mayer Trio Live in Concert” was released in November and debuted at No. 34 on The Billboard 200.
