IT’S JUST A LITTLE CRUSH
I have been a big fan of Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls since her days in Eden’s Crush. Could you tell me how many copies of the Dolls CD have sold in the U.S? And how about Eden’s Crush?
Separately, here in Las Vegas there is a Pussycat Dolls Lounge in Caesars Palace that frequently advertises a Pussycat Dolls group, but it’s not the same girls with Nicole. How can they get away with this?
Robin Antin started the burlesque troop in 1995 and swiftly got booked at Los Angeles’ Viper Room for a year-long engagement. Soon, celebrities like Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and Pink were guesting as Dolls in Los Angeles for special performances.
The Dolls were also seen in the film “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” memorably cavorting with Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz. Eventually, A&M and Interscope Records struck a deal with Antin to create a music group named the Pussycat Dolls (www.pcdmusic.com). More recently, the nightclub Pure at Caesar’s Las Vegas created the Pussycat Dolls Lounge (www.pcdlounge.com).
Think of the Pussycat Dolls as a brand — where there is both a Las Vegas-based act as well as a music group.
So far, the Pussycat Dolls’ album, “PCD,” has sold 1.9 million copies in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan. It has spun off four hits on The Billboard Hot 100: “Don’t Cha” (No. 2), “Stickwitu” (No. 5), “Beep” (No. 13) and “Buttons” (No. 4).
Also, Eden’s Crush (Scherzinger’s former group) sold 379,000 copies of its “PopStars” album.
I was wondering about how Goldfrapp was selling. A couple of years ago I saw their show at the 9:30 club in Washington, D.C. It was such an enjoyable show when I saw that they had a new album coming I was greatly looking forward to the tour.
The American release of “Supernature” came months after the rest of the world got it. I assumed they did this so they could “work” the album in the States while it was still new, to us at least. The CD has been out for a while now … and no tour.
I’ve heard them on a couple of TV shows, but no live dates in America. The only thing I can think is that “Supernature” must be tanking and they don’t think a tour would be viable. That’s kind of hard to believe since I saw them play a pretty packed show when they toured the “Black Cherry” album.
I was wondering how the CD is actually selling or if you knew why there was no action on the tour front?
Actually, you’re incorrect about thinking Goldfrapp didn’t tour the U.S. in support of “Supernature.” They played six dates between March and May in Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; New York; Austin, Texas and Portland, Ore. They also opened for Depeche Mode at Jones Beach in New York. Granted, a grand total of seven live shows isn’t much, but it still counts as something. Lucky for you, they are coming back to the U.S. this fall for another tour, so perhaps you’ll catch them then.
The act’s most recent album, “Supernature,” has sold 49,000 since its release in March. That’s pretty handsome, considering that its previous two albums, 2000’s “Felt Mountain” and 2003’s “Black Cherry,” have sold 52,000 each, to date.
Up next for Goldfrapp is the release of a remix album titled “We Are Glitter” on Oct. 17. The set boasts reworkings by Benny Benassi, Ewan Pearson, the Flaming Lips, Francois K and Goldfrapp itself.
I have a question about one of my faves from the ’80s — Jody Watley. I saw that she released a remake of Madonna’s “Borderline” and it was available on the Apple iTunes Music Store, which I of course, immediately purchased.
So I was wondering, is she planning on releasing a new CD anytime soon? I have been jamming to “Larger Than Life” the last few weeks and I cannot get enough of her. You cannot go wrong with “Real Love,” “Friends” or “Everything!”
Thanks for your time!
You’re in luck. Jody Watley’s new album, “The Makeover,” comes out Aug. 8. You can buy it via iTunes or at any Virgin Megastore. It includes her jazzy, chilled-out cover of Madonna’s “Borderline.”
Watley will perform on “Live With Regis & Kelly” on Aug. 7 and at Joe’s Pub in New York on Aug. 12. Additionally, she’ll make three in-store appearances at Virgin Megastore locations in West Hollywood (Aug. 8), San Francisco (Aug. 9) and Union Square, New York (Aug. 10).
She’ll also be taking part in Billboard’s Dance Music Summit in Las Vegas next month. The conference will take place Sept. 17-20 at the Palms Casino Resort. Watley will be a speaker on the Billboard Master Class panel on Sept. 18.
