THE RETURN OF SUMMER?
Hi Keith,
I see that Donna Summer’s “I Got Your Love” reached the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart. And “Power of Love” just recently debuted. I am wondering if you know of any plans for Summer to release a full-length album.
She hasn’t had an album since 1991’s “Mistaken Identity.” Any rumors on negotiations with any labels? Also, how many copies have her discs “The Journey” and “Gold” sold?

Right now, Donna Summer has two singles charting on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart. For the list dated Nov. 26, 2005, she is No. 7 with “I Got Your Love” and at No. 44 with the debut of “Power of Love.” It is the first time Summer has had two singles simultaneously on the Club Play tally since 1980.
“I Got Your Love” received exclusive commercial release this summer through the Apple Music iTunes Store, while “Power of Love” is Summer’s contribution to the recent Luther Vandross tribute album “So Amazing.”
So far, we have not heard anything about Summer signing a new record deal with any label.
Summer’s “The Journey: The Very Best of Donna Summer,” released in 2003, has sold 194,000 in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This year’s two-CD anthology “Gold” has shifted 19,000.
Interesting side note: Out of Summer’s top 10 selling SoundScan-era (1991-present) albums, nine are hits/live/anthology collections. What’s the lone studio set among the bunch? 1979’s “Bad Girls.” The double-album garnered five Grammy award nominations, including one for album of the year. BUSH LEAGUE

With Kate Bush’s first release in 12 years — the amazing “Aerial” — I was wondering how her past albums have sold. According to the story on her in the Nov. 12 issue of Billboard, it says that 1989’s “The Sensual World” is her biggest release and is certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Do you have the numbers for the rest?

“Aerial” debuted at No. 48 on The Billboard 200 in the issue dated Nov. 26, giving Bush her first entry since 1993. That year “The Red Shoes” bowed at No. 28.
Here is a rundown of all of Bush’s albums, and how much they have sold in the U.S. since 1991 (when Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data):
“The Kick Inside” – 74,000
“Lionheart” – 28,000
“Never for Ever” – 39,000
“The Dreaming” – 42,000
“Hounds of Love” – 206,000
“The Whole Story” – 195,000
“The Sensual World” – 242,000
“The Red Shoes” – 298,000
To casual music fans, Bush is likely best-known for her songs “This Woman’s Work,” “Wuthering Heights” and her duet with Peter Gabriel, “Don’t Give Up.”

Sufjan Stevens’ “Illinois” has sold 73,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album was released in July on Asthmatic Kitty records and debuted and peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s Top Independent albums chart.
