R.E.M., the Roots, Live, and the Backstreet Boys’ Kevin Richardson have joined the Save Our Environment coalition and — along with a host of other artists including the Beastie Boys’ Mike Diamond, Alanis Morissette, Jackson Browne, Barenaked Ladies, Dave Matthews Band, Moby, and James Taylor — are actively opposing the U.S. Senate’s proposed energy plan.
As previously reported, these artists and others are encouraging their fans to visit the coalition’s official Web site and contact their Senators to lobby against the plan, which won approval from the House of Representatives last year.
The artists’ alliance, dubbed the New Power Project, has been directing promotional efforts at fans through Web sites, E-mail lists, and concerts, raising awareness and promoting opposition to the controversial plan, which includes a recommendation for oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
“Drilling in our last wild places like the Arctic Refuge? Risking Three Mile Islands with more nuclear power? That thinking is as old as fossil fuels,” Diamond said in a statement. “We would all benefit from a plan inclusive of environmental conservation, fuel efficiency, and alternative energy sources.”
