Armin van Buuren chatted with Billboard’s Kat Bein ahead of his Ultra Music Festival performance, discussing new music, the upcoming 900th episode celebration of his radio show and more.
Speaking of his brand-new song “Don’t Give Up on Me,” which dropped Friday (March 29), van Buuren tells Billboard that the track’s collaborators Lucas & Steve are his “Dutch buddies” who are “doing incredibly well.”
“We wrote it with Josh Cumbee in LA and we just shot a cool video for it,” he adds. “So I’m excited to see what people think of the new track.”
Van Buuren also talks about the upcoming celebration of the 900th episode of his radio show A State of Trance, which will be held in San Francisco on June 29. “It’s long overdue,” he says of the event.
“Last time we were in the U.S. with A State of Trance was seven years ago, so it took us a while to come back. We’ve done a lot of other territories, but we really feel it’s good now to take the next step with A State of Trance. It’s a festival now, it’s no longer just a radio show.”
He adds that when they started the radio show back in 2001, it was very small and they never had any plans for it to grow as much as it has, but he greatly appreciates how much people have supported it and listened to it.
“It’s now a platform and I’m super proud of it, but I’m also a bit scared because it’s such a big responsibility and I don’t do it for Armada or myself just, I really also want to promote trance music in general, so it means I’m making a big deal out of also promoting other labels, other DJs,” he continues. “Especially for the young guys and upcoming talent, it’s important to give them a stage to shine, because they’re the next generation and that’s what our focus is on.”
