Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson shocked their fans when it was reported Monday that they were engaged after just 24 days of dating. As soon as the news first broke, Twitter exploded with reactions — both celebratory and downright confused — so Billboard’s Kevan Kenney hit the streets of New York City to find out how people feel now that they have had a few days to process the big news.
“I was on Instagram yesterday and I was pretty excited ‘cause her ring is just gorgeous and classy,” one New Yorker shares, while another says, “I think that’s awesome. I’m happy for her.”
One guy, however, is less ecstatic about the news. When he’s asked if he’s happy for her, he replies, “Yeah, but I wanted to marry her!”
Billboard also speaks with a real-life couple of four years, and they both agree that the engagement is “pretty soon,” while another person says that while it’s great news, she agrees that it is too hasty. “You should wait a little bit longer than 24 days,” she says. “That’s not even a month. That’s crazy!”
“Too young, too early,” another woman tells Billboard. “You have to get to know somebody. You have to get to know their good qualities, their bad qualities — and there are a lot of bad qualities. Trust me.”
People are also asked how they feel about the potential couple name “Petriana,” which one passerby says sounds like a tea drink.
