A song fit for a (pop) princess. Ariana Grande took to Instagram on Friday (March 1) to share an impromptu cover of “The Sweetest Sounds,” from the 1962 musical No Strings and the 1997 Disney adaptation of Cinderella.
In the short clip, Ari belts out the Broadway classic’s hopeful lyrics a cappella while using an adorable Instagram filter and getting her makeup done.
Though it was penned in 1962 by Richard Rodgers of the famed songwriting duo Rodgers & Hammerstein for No Strings, the tune was later made famous during Grande’s lifetime by Brandy, who portrayed the iconic princess Cinderella in The Wonderful World of Disney’s 1997 made-for-TV adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, alongside Whitney Houston, Bernadette Peters and Whoopi Goldberg.
Ariana’s love for musical theater is well-known among her passionate fanbase. Though she’s now one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, the “Thank U, Next” singer got her start on Broadway after booking the role of Charlotte in the 2008 Jason Robert Brown musical 13 at the age of 15. Plus, her latest No. 1 hit song, “7 Rings,” is an interpolation of another Rodgers & Hammerstein classic: “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music.
