Here are five dance records that sample the legendary singer?.
Tchami – Adieu
Tchami’s “Adieu” lives among his most popular records. The cinematic, melodic masterpiece samples Risse’s cover of Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” and has garnered over 11 million streams on Spotify to date. Tchami places emphasis on Franklin’s line, “You tell me to leave you alone.” Each time he repeats it, the line seems to take on new meaning based on the ethereal elements surrounding it.
Junior Sanchez, Sultan & Ned Shepard – Deeper Love
Junior Sanchez and Sultan + Ned Shepard’s “Deeper Love” was released in 2014 on Steve Angello’s Size Records. The festival heater samples Franklin’s funk-filled single “A Deeper Love.” A cover of the original record was also sampled by Tiësto who released “What Can We Do (A Deeper Love)” in 2012. Third Party’s remix of the record landed on Tiësto’s Club Life – Volume 2 Miami compilation.
Gramatik – In This Whole World
Track No. 12 on Gramatik’s 2010 LP, Street Bangerz Vol. 3, is none other than “In This Whole World” which samples Franklin’s “Young, Gifted and Black” released back in 1972 on Atlantic Records. The groove-filled jam incorporates the icon’s soulful vocals and, occasionally, tastefully chops them up. Gramatik fills the remainder of the production with bright keys, guitar riffs and light percussion.
Zeds Dead – Coffee Break
Zeds Dead’s “Coffee Break” is practically an oldie at this point, but it’s definitely still a goodie. The bass funk beat samples Franklin’s “I Say a Little Prayer” from 1968. The Canadian duo released the song as a free download and have played it out plenty live. Whether it be at EDC Vegas, Summer Set or Lost Lands, Zeds Dead fans can expect to hear this one bang.
Mura Masa – Day 23: Have Faith In Me
Right from the get-go, you’ll hear Aretha Franklin’s beautiful voice shine on Mura Masa’s “Day 23: Have Faith In Me.” Mura Masa pitches the 1968 “People Get Ready” sample up around the 20-second mark and compliments her vocals with vibrant brass synths and a warm bassline.
