Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler posted an impressive showing in his debut Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, and although the indie rock artist’s team won the exhibition contest, 59-51, at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Friday night (Feb. 13), one of his opponents, comedian Kevin Hart, walked away with the fan-voted MVP Award.
Towering over teammates like actor Ansel Elgort and Little League star Mo’ne Davis, Butler was an inside enforcer in the Zaza Pachulia mold, often posting up and facilitating pick-and-rolls. Butler collected his only foul of the evening when one of his rebounds was snatched away by Hart, who engaged in a tussle with the hulking Butler.
While Common also played in the celebrity showdown, he didn’t fill up the box score like Butler, who finished the game with 8 points and 11 rebounds.
“I grew up watching a lot of Hakeem Olajuwon, who’s one of my all-time heroes,” Butler told Billboard last month. “I definitely have learned how to play the post, but then, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve added an outside game, three-point shooting.”
Hart won the Most Valuable Player trophy for the fourth time, and announced his retirement from the game in his acceptance speech. MAGIC! performed at halftime of the Celebrity Game, with singer Nasri Atweh wearing a Kyle Lowry jersey while performing the No. 1 hit “Rude.”
