Further pushing the boundaries of the “music video” concept, Arcade Fire unveiled an eye-popping interactive film/experience entitled “The Widlerness Downtown,” set to the song “We Used To Wait” from their recent Billboard 200-topping album “The Suburbs.” Directed by Chris Milk, the project utilizes Google Street View, multiple browser windows and 3D canvas rendering to let the viewer revisit their childhood home and write a note to their “younger selves.”

“The Wilderness Downtown” was created using HTML5 technology and Google “Chrome Experience,” with choreographed windows triggered by the song and adhering to the size of a user’s screen. The project follows up equally innovative online clips for the band’s 2007 sophomore disc “Neon Bible”: the video for the title track used point-and-click technology, while “Black Mirror” let viewers trigger different instruments during the song.
The Wilderness Downtown precedes Arcade Fire’s upcoming North American tour this fall, which kicks off Sept. 22 in St. Paul, Mn. The band has also announced an additional date at Berkeley, Ca.’s Greek Theatre on Oct. 3, after a show at the Greek scheduled for the previous night sold out.
