You’re young, you’re beautiful, you’re talented, and you’re just the right amount of crazy and cocky to get ahead. Where do you belong? With the shining stars of “California,” of course.
Anthony Russo is 20 years old, and he knows how to make his own fate. The singer-songwriter has a golden voice and the production skills to make his own wave. He’s been grinding as an independent artist for years in his native St. Louis, Mo., working at a car wash for tips to pay for music equipment and recording catchy dance-pop tunes in his parent’s basement.
A few paychecks and a few hundred thousand Soundcloud plays later, the chance to move to Los Angeles seemed too good to pass up. It’s been an adjustment, but it’s already provided him with more than enough inspiration to hit the ground running.
“This state provides every energy, every type of person, every frame of opinion you can imagine,” Russo says in an emailed statement. “It’s wonderful to call this home.”
Besides the weather, the beautiful people, the food, and the culture, LA is ground zero for musicians and artists looking to get collaborative. Russo has made fast friends with another writer-producer named Digi. He’s one of Russo’s “go-to partners,” and it was with Digi that Russo started the idea for his debut single, a sunshine-smothered summer romance that mirrors Russo’s personal journey, introducing both Russo to the world and “California” to the young artist.
“We were in the studio one day, and one of my managers walked in and heard us working on ‘California,’” Russo says. “(My manager) immediately said ‘Yo, focus on that one. It feels real and is what you’re living right now. Fuck all that other shit. Focus on this one.’ So when it came to the record ‘California’, the emotions, the energy, the creative drive was built up inside. All it took was focused tunnel vision to pull it out.”
“California” is the kind of radio jam that paints a picture in your mind, but Russo makes it easy for you and set that picture in motion with a beachy music video that’s pure teen dream. This is the “California” fantasy everyone’s dying to live. Check it out below, and look out for more from Russo in the coming months.
