Despite having received the most nominations going into the event, Arctic Monkeys and Imogen Heap both left mtvU’s Woodie Awards last night (Oct. 25) empty handed. Instead, it was acts like O.A.R., Taking Back Sunday and Angels & Airwaves that claimed top honors during the ceremony at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.
Fans cast more than three million votes for their favorite artists online for the third annual event, which was punctuated by live performances from past and present nominees. Heap opened the show with “Hide and Seek,” which helped her earn a nomination for best emerging artist (Breaking Woodie), Left Field Woodie and most streamed categories. Plain White T’s, Gnarls Barkley and O.A.R.’s “Lay Down” took home those honors, respectively.
A shaggy-haired Beck, his full band and a dancer stormed the stage with “Nausea,” from the artist’s most recent effort “The Information,” and “E-Pro,” from 2005’s “Guero.” Angels & Airwaves took home the Woodie of the Year award; fellow nominee Gym Class Heroes played two songs, including “Cupid’s Chokehold” with William Beckett from the Academy Is… (another nominee in the category).
Gorillaz and 30 Seconds To Mars both earned best video awards, the former for animation (“El Manana”) and the latter for live action (“The Kill”). System Of A Down was honored with the Good Woodie for its commitment to social causes and Taking Back Sunday were recognized for best tour. U.K. rock trio the Subways were voters’ favorite international artist and AFI scored the Alumni Woodie, or the “You’re Still O.K. in our Book” award.
TV On The Radio closed the festivities with two tracks from their recent album, “Return to Cookie Mountain”: “Province” and “Wolf Like Me.”
