Barry Manilow, Glen Campbell, Johnny Mathis, Petula Clark and Glen Campbell were among the performers who paid tribute to Andy Williams, recipient of the 2008 ELLA Award from the Society of Singers (SOS). Held last evening (May 19) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., the 17th annual awards ceremony counts among its previous career achievement honorees Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Tony Bennett, Celine Dion and the award’s namesake Ella Fitzgerald.
Netting the highest bid ($3000) at this year’s live auction was a pair of tickets to the 51st annual Grammy Awards and after-party. All proceeds from the gala, which also included a silent auction, will help the nonprofit SOS provide services to meet the emergency financial needs of professional singers worldwide.
In addition, the organization — founded in 1984 and headed by president/CEO Jerry F. Sharell — hands out 20 scholarships each year to advance aspiring singers’ vocal education.
