You’re floating through space, drifting among the cosmos, taking in the sights of the distant stars and the colorful, silent bursts of supernovas when you suddenly have a realization. The Universe is a fractal running on a math equation that loops endlessly in on itself, a masterpiece of geometric patterns with no beginning and no end, and in this realization there is great freedom.
That’s pretty heady, but it’s the kind of thoughts you might entertain while listening to Bay Area producer An-ten-nae’s third deep-bass LP Medicine. It’s luxurious beats swirl around in your ears, creating wild scenes in your brain while you bob your head to hip hop-inspired drums.
It opens cinematically with the atmospheric calm of “This Is My Life.” “Dreams Will Come Just Be” is particular funky, while “Walking with Wild Flower in Bloom” and “Kia Toa” makes incredibly fun use of Asian influences.
It’s 13 tracks are instrumental intricacies best listened to with headphones and your eyes closed. Of course, An-ten-nae knows how to make his otherworldly music come to life in the live setting, and he’s scheduled to hypnotize audiences at this year’s Electric Forest, Shambhala, and Global Eclipse Festivals later this year.
Medicine dropped earlier this month via San Francisco’s own Muti Music. Listen to it and get lost in space with the sounds of An-ten-nae below.
