Within hours of reports that Rihanna declined an offer to headline the Super Bowl LIII halftime show, celebrities have taken to social media in support of RiRi’s stand with exiled former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Amy Schumer posted a lengthy message to her Instagram page, urging men and white Americans to stand up for what’s right. “I wonder why more white players aren’t kneeling,” she wrote. “Once you witness the truly deep inequality and endless racism people of color face in our country, not to mention the police brutality and murders. Why not kneel next to your brothers? Otherwise how are you not complicit?”
“I think it would be cool if @maroon5 backed out of super bowl like @badgalriri Did,” she continued. “I personally told my reps I wouldn’t do a Super Bowl commercial this year. I know it must sound like a privilege ass sacrifice but it’s all i got.”
Tinashe, Jameela Jamil and Anika Noni Rose also voiced their support for RiRi. See below.
What a Powerhouse. Rihanna’s grown into such an important voice for women, for people of colour and for body positivity. Turning down a $2M dollar cheque and all that publicity and the records and clothes and make up she would have sold off the back of it…is God-Level Boss. pic.twitter.com/tBm2OOfQOM
