Up-and-coming comedian Brendan Sagalow was working the crowd during the opening of his set at New York City club Carolines on Tuesday (May 8) — and got an unexpected surprise from Amy Schumer.
According to Sagalow’s comments on his podcast, he described the moment as such: “I’m five minutes into my set, I’m doing some crowd work, and then from off to the side, I hear, ‘Hey Brendan! It’s Amy Schumer! Can I do 10 minutes?’ in the middle of my set. I look over and it’s Amy, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, of course!’ I had no other reaction.”
Some of the online response has been a mixed bag, but Sagalow was totally fine with the interruption, relishing the free PR. “I’m like, ‘This is a good thing! This is a great thing!’ Everybody thinks I’m friends with Amy, she knows my name, she said she follows me on Instagram, which she mentioned,” he said. The reason for the intrusion was said by Schumer to be practice for her upcoming SNL monologue; she hosts the show this Saturday, May 12, with special musical guest Kacey Musgraves.
As far as more scheduled-in-advance Schumer appearances, she plays the opening night of the Seaport District’s Pier 17 Rooftop Concert Series on August 1 and 2, the second night being with Kings of Leon. You can find ticket information here.
