Last Thursday (Aug. 20), Los Angeles’ El Rey theater played host to a concert that featured the diverse sounds of hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd, singer/actress Pia Mia, singer-songwriter Gavin James and pop singer Børns. Outside of large festivals, artists with such varied sounds rarely wind up on the same bill together, but these four musicians are bonded by their inclusion in cycle 2 of American Express’ UNSTAGED: Artists in Residence program, a campaign that aims to boost awareness of rising musical acts.
Throughout the night, each of the artists had 30 minutes to perform for the sold-out crowd of Amex card holders, and exhibit the talents that have made them some of the year’s most buzzed-about new acts. And though the musical styles of the artists could not have been more different, the enthusiasm with which each musician approached their set successfully showcased the infectious passion and refreshing individuality that ties the 2015 AIR artists together.
