NBC’s scheduling maneuver on Sunday paid off as a special edition of “America’s Got Talent” bested the debut of ABC’s singing competition show “Rising Star.”
A Sunday edition of “America’s Got Talent” pulled in 8 million viewers on June 22, topping the 5 million that tune in to see “Rising Star,” according to Nielsen’s early estimates. A true ratings report that takes into account “Rising Star” airing live in all time zones except the Pacific will be issued later today (June 23).
In the 18-49 demo, “AGT’s” viewership was 2.7 million to “Star’s” 1.9 million, according to Nielsen estimates.
The move gave NBC its highest non-sports, non-awards show Sunday night ratings in the 9-11 hour in years. In the total viewers, it was the best since May 22, 2011; in the demo, it was Jan. 6, 2013, NBC reported.
One area in which ABC can claim success is the amount of usage of its app and activity on social media. ABC announced Sunday that its app, the mechanism for voting on performers, had been downloaded more than 1 million times. “Rising Star” received more than 129,000 tweets during the show, nearly triple the number related to “America’s Got Talent.”
“Rising Star” produced by Keshet DCP, a 50/50 joint venture of Keshet International and Dick Clark Productions, which shares the same parent company (Guggenheim Digital Media) as Billboard.
