U.S. DJ Roger Sanchez is the latest denizen of clubland to go overground on the U.K. pop chart, after his single “Another Chance” (Defected) raced to No. 1 on the territory’s singles chart yesterday (July 8). The track by the prominent house DJ hit the top after weeks as a major club record, and dwarfs his previous biggest British crossover, “I Never Knew” (INCredible), which reached No. 24 in January 2000.
Last Wednesday, Sanchez celebrated in advance with a 90-minute DJ set at London’s Uptown Records store. “I’m kind of surprised,” the DJ told Billboard.com of the song’s success. “I’ve always done stuff a lot more on the club and underground tip. What I’m very happy about is that people have been vibing with the track and feeling something out of it.” Sanchez’ debut album, “Contact,” is due July 30 in the U.K.
With last week’s bestsellers Hear’say dropping 1-5 with “The Way To Your Love” (Polydor), the new top four was all-American. The multi-artist cover of “Lady Marmalade” (Interscope/Polydor) opened at No. 2, Wheatus landed at No. 3 with a cover of Erasure’s “A Little Respect,” and OPM debuted at No. 4 with “Heaven is a Halfpipe” (Atlantic).
There were further American arrivals in the top-20, with Jessica Simpson’s “Irresistible” (Columbia) new at No. 11 and Blink-182’s “The Rock Show” (MCA) at No. 14. Redressing the balance a little was London soul band Damage, in at No. 12 with “So What If I” (Cooltempo/Chrysalis), while Irish newcomers Bellefire, the latest proteges of Boyzone/Ronan Keating/Samantha Mumba svengali Louis Walsh, opened at No. 18 with “Perfect Bliss” (Virgin), a recent No. 2 in the group’s home country.
On the album chart, Travis entered a fourth week at No. 1 with its Independiente set “The Invisible Band.” In a quiet week, the only top-20 arrivals were “Pleased to Meet You,” the new Mercury set by modern rock veterans James at No. 11, and “The Greatest Hits,” a collection by Welsh pop/rock singer Bonnie Tyler at No. 18. That set is a joint venture by indie label Sanctuary with Sony.
“Lady Marmalade” becomes Europe’s favorite single with a 3-1 climb on Music & Media’s Eurochart Hot 100 Singles survey, ending Shaggy’s four-week reign with “Angel” (MCA). His “Hotshot” album surges 10-2 on the European Top 100 Albums chart, on which French star Manu Chao holds firm at No. 1 with “Proxima Estacion: Esperanza” (Virgin). U.K. dance gurus Basement Jaxx have the top new entry on that chart at No. 19 with “Rooty” (XL Recordings/Beggars Banquet).
