Tim McGraw, the Black Eyed Peas, Green Day, Destiny’s Child and Kelly Clarkson triumphed last night (Nov. 22), each taking two trophies away from the 33rd annual American Music Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
McGraw picked up awards for favorite male country artist and favorite country album for “Live Like You Were Dying” (Curb). Validating their cross-genre appeal, the Peas nabbed the favorite band, duo or group award in the pop/rock and rap/hip-hop categories.
In addition to being named favorite soul/R&B band, duo or group, Destiny’s Child was honored with the favorite soul/R&B album for its swan song, “Destiny Fulfilled” (Columbia). Green Day’s “American Idiot” earned the favorite pop/rock album award, while the band was named favorite alternative music artist.
Clarkson took the favorite adult contemporary artist and won the T-Mobile text-in award for favorite artist, votes for which were cast via the ABC Web site and text messages from T-Mobile customers.
Despite leading the field with four nominations, Mariah Carey settled for just one trophy: favorite female soul/R&B artist. “Thank you so much for the warmth and the love,” she said, accepting the award minutes after performing the show’s opening number, “Don’t Forget About Us.”
Broadcast live on ABC and hosted by Cedric “The Entertainer,” the ceremony also included a duet by Cyndi Lauper and Sarah McLachlan on the former’s “Time After Time,” and performances by the likes of Pharrell, Kenny Chesney, Gwen Stefani, Lindsay Lohan, Santana, the Rolling Stones and Eurythmics.
Except for the text-in award, AMA winners are selected via survey of approximately 20,000 music consumers.
