Depression is a dark cloud that follows you wherever you go. It can strike at any moment, shoving its frowny face in your otherwise happy moments without any notice or reason. It’s a maddening cycle that makes it all the harder to get out from under. When you can’t explain to your friends what ails you, how do you make sense of it all?
Alison Wonderland captures that confusion in “Easy,” the latest single from her beautiful sophomore LP Awake. “Walked into the bathroom just so I could cry/ Wish I knew why,” she sings over an otherwise upbeat rhythm. It’s the juxtaposition of the outside world and the turmoil within that make “Easy” a relatable song for anyone who has suffered from depression, and the music video captures that dichotomy with a literal rain cloud that follows Wonderland like a spotlight through the street.
Wonderland dances and sings her way through the darkness, drenched all the way. It’s thoughtful and even somehow fun, but it’s the silence at the end that hits the hardest. The “Easy” music video was directed by Bo Mirhosseni, the same mind behind Disclosure‘s “When a Fire Starts to Burn” and Kaytranada‘s “Glowed Up” featuring Anderson .Paak. Check the video out below.
