“Me and Miguel are going on tour together, it’s happening in March,” she revealed, with the fellow R&B singer joining on video chat. The two collaborated on her new album, “Girl on Fire,” as well as his “Kaleidoscope Dream” track “Where’s the Fun in Forever.”
“More than anything, what would you say overall is the storyline or the theme of this album?” Miguel asked her. “I get this sense you feel more empowered than you ever have before.”
“I think that description is perfect,” she responded. “You must be a songwriter! …I think having a son now, I found a place I never knew before. I feel like I have a center I didn’t have before, an openness I didn’t have before.”
Husband Swizz Beatz also joined her on Tuesday, nodding his head as she previewed “Girl on Fire” track-by-track.
“You feel like there’s moments of triumph, moments of real vulnerable… like me and a friend talking,” she said.
The album ranges from balladry and bedroom talk to more upbeat, inspirational music, including the Nicki Minaj-featuring title track. Contributors to the album also include Gary Clark Jr. and Maxwell, who perform on steamy ballad “The Fire We Make” — Maxwell’s first duet. Frank Ocean co-wrote “One Thing,” and newcomer Sande co-wrote three tracks, including the stripped-down “Not Even the King.” Keys said she did three takes of the latter track, leaving a bare version for the album — no overdubs or extra production.
The new album arrives Nov. 26.
